India residency adds new chapter to artist’s family story

“The residency affirmed for me that art deepens when it is given time, space, and the courage to sit within complex histories,” writes creative producer and performer Nadia Freeman about her residency at Maah Space in Jaipur, India. During the residency, Nadia connected with local arts practitioners, exploring and reflecting on the relationship between people living in India and the diaspora abroad. She was supported to attend the residency through a grant from the Foundation’s Arts Experience Fund.

Mumbai residency reveals the rich tapestry of Indian embroidery

Paul McLachlan’s six-week residency in Mumbai marked a new direction in his practice, connecting his process-driven painting with the traditions of Indian embroidery. Working closely with local artisans, the residency offered an opportunity to build connections, learn advanced embroidery techniques, and develop new works that merge his painterly approach with traditional Indian craft. Supported by the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s Arts Experience Fund, the experience has fostered ongoing creative relationships and will culminate in a forthcoming exhibition in New Zealand.

Serendipity takes centre stage — NZ performing-arts leaders tour India

We chat with Moss Te Ururangi Patterson, artistic and executive director of The New Zealand Dance Company, about visiting India as part of a Foundation delegation of six performing arts leaders. Travelling to Mumbai and Goa, the group explored how performing arts are created and delivered, forged new industry connections and immersed themselves in the energy and ideas of the Serendipity Arts Festival.

Arts Experience Fund

The Arts Experience Fund (formerly Art Practitioners Fund) supports self-directed opportunities for New Zealand-based arts practitioners to build meaningful artistic and professional connections in Asia. This can include residencies, research tours, work placements and exchanges.
