About our arts programme

The Foundation's arts programme brings Asia into the mainstream of New Zealand arts by inspiring New Zealand arts professionals to grow their connections and knowledge of Asia.

The Foundation has a proud history of supporting the development of individual practitioners and Asian arts projects in New Zealand through arts sector grants and artist residencies.

Both the Auckland and Christchurch lantern festivals and Auckland and Wellington Diwali festivals were founded by the Foundation. Due to their success, these festivals are now delivered by the relevant local government event teams.

The Foundation currently offers the following programmes of arts funding:

Arts Experience Fund

The Arts Experience Fund supports New Zealand-based arts practitioners by providing grants that support experiential opportunities to strengthen artistic and professional connections with Asia. This includes residencies, work placements, research tours, and exchanges.

Curators spark cultural connections on return to Hanoi

A year after travelling to Viet Nam on the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s emerging curators tour, five of the curators reunited in Hanoi in October—this time joined by three New Zealand artists—for a three-week residency. The residency marked the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and Viet Nam and aimed to foster creative exchange with local partners, culminating in an exhibition featuring the New Zealand artists. The trip was supported by the Foundation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Cultural Diplomacy International Programme (CDIP), and the New Zealand Embassy in Hanoi. In this article, curator Simon Palenski reflects on the residency and the connections the group made.

From Ōtautahi to Seoul: There’s A Tuesday’s global leap

Christchurch indie band There’s A Tuesday has wrapped up a 10-day residency in Seoul, where they performed, recorded, connected with industry representatives and immersed themselves in Seoul's vibrant music scene. Music journalist Samantha Cheong joined their journey, capturing how music can bridge cultures and deepen the connection between Asia and Aotearoa. The band's ten-day music residency was made possible through a collaboration between the Asia New Zealand Foundation, Auckland-based not-for-profit music hub Big Fan and South Korea's CJ Cultural Foundation.

Pushing boundaries: curator explores 'ridiculously interesting' art in South Korea

Senior curator at Lower Hutt's Dowse Art Museum, Chelsea Nichols, travelled to South Korea to attend the Busan Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Frieze Art Fair as well as take in all the museums and artist studios she could over a jam-packed 12 days late last year.
