The Arts Experience Fund (formerly Art Practitioners Fund) supports self-directed opportunities for New Zealand-based arts practitioners to build meaningful artistic and professional connections in Asia. This can include residencies, research tours, work placements and exchanges.

The purpose of the fund is to:

  • strengthen artistic and professional ties between Aotearoa and Asia.

  • expand networks and open new opportunities for New Zealand artists.

  • boost the visibility and international engagement of the New Zealand arts community.

The fund offers grants of up to NZ $5000.

Applications for 2026 have closed. Applications for the 2027 Arts Experience Fund will open on 1 December 2026.

NZ filmmakers explore the centuries-old shops of old Kyoto

Filmmaker Robin Greenberg and her Kyoto-born project partner, Yoko Couling, spent a week exploring Kyoto’s winding backstreets and hidden alleys, seeking out the city’s centuries-old, family-run shops for an upcoming project. Their research saw the pair interview the current generation of shopkeepers who have kept their businesses afloat, resisting the tide of mass production and consumerism. Carving paths: art, joinery and exchange

Artist Ngaroma Riley’s visit to Japan brought her into the company of skilled female carvers and the world of traditional Japanese carving techniques. “I left with my head full of new knowledge, my heart full of gratitude, and my arms full of gifts — in true Japanese style,” she writes of her time at Tohoku University of Art and Design—words that echo the spirit of her wider journey. Ngaroma's journey was made possible with help from an Asia New Zealand Foundation Arts Practitioners Grant.
