About our
sports programme

Our sports programme provides New Zealand sportspeople opportunities to grow more knowledgeable, connected and confident with Asia, in particular Japan.

With the large number of Kiwis travelling to prepare, participate and officiate in pinnacle events being hosted in Japan over the next few years (including the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics), the focus of the Foundation's sports programme will be on Japan.

* Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the way the Foundation delivers some programmes will change to reflect the situation as we move through lockdown levels.

Two contestable funding opportunities are available:

  • Community Sport Funding – available to New Zealanders travelling to Japan to participate, train, officiate or upskill in sport.
  • School Sport Funding – for school groups travelling to Japan with the key purpose to participate in sport.

Strategic Partnership Funding

A third funding stream, Strategic Partnership Funding, is available for major organisations to build long-term partnerships with the Foundation to deliver projects or events that increase New Zealanders' confidence to engage with Asia through sport.

This is a high-level fund aimed at national sporting organisations and local organising committees for national or international sporting events.
