Postgraduate
research grants

The Foundation invites talented postgraduate students to apply for a scholarship of up to $3000 to help with research into Asia-related themes.

The grants are aimed at supporting new research and domestic fieldwork, which will in turn promote debate and discussion on matters relating to Asia and New Zealand, with implications for foreign and trade/economic policy.

Applications are now open, closing 31 July 2021.

Possible themes

Possible themes include:

  • Foreign policy
  • international relations
  • regional security and defence
  • international and maritime law
  • interfaith issues, cyber and digital policy
  • traditional and non-traditional security challenges
  • Asia and the Pacific
  • multilateralism
  • ASEAN
  • regional environmental issues
  • NZ-Asia trade policy issues
  • transnational economic integration (e.g. value chains and production networks)
  • governance and regulation (e.g. SOEs, government procurement, labour and investment flows), political systems (e.g. democracy, communism) and attitudes.

Who can apply

Eligible applicants must be:

  • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents undertaking postgraduate research at any tertiary institution who needs supplementary support for overseas fieldwork undertaken as part of the degree/qualification
  • Undertaking new research (i.e. not already duplicating work that is already done).

Any individual that meets the criteria above is eligible to apply. Priority will be given to applicants who can demonstrate their ability to plan and undertake activities effectively and can accurately account for how the funds will be spent.
