Join us in Wellington for the official launch of the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s 2026 New Zealanders' Perceptions of Asia and Asian Peoples report.

Hear an overview of the report’s key findings, followed by a panel discussion with Professor Paul Spoonley, The Spinoff’s Toby Manhire, Professor David Capie and the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s director of research, Dr Julia Macdonald.

Highlights:

  • Amid growing global disorder, which countries do New Zealanders view as our closest friends and biggest threats?

  • How are New Zealanders’ travel patterns mirroring changing perceptions?

  • From misinformation to cyberattacks and climate change, what global issues are New Zealanders most worried about?

  • How are New Zealanders expecting developments in Asia to impact New Zealand’s future?

  • What are New Zealanders’ top Asia-related interests?

The Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhono has been tracking New Zealanders' perceptions of Asia since 1997. Now in its 29th year, the annual Perceptions of Asia survey offers comprehensive insights into New Zealanders' awareness, knowledge of and interest in Asia.

The thematic survey spans a wide range of topics, including which countries we see as friends, what issues New Zealanders are most concerned about, trust in major powers, as well as media and entertainment consumption.

Doors will open at 5pm, and the presentation begins at 5:30pm.

Attendees will have a chance to ask questions, network with others and learn from informed experts on Asia and New Zealand.

This event is free to attend, but please RSVP for catering purposes.
