Education Champions
Dot Carter
Dot was motivated to become a Foundation Champion through growing up in Indonesia.
Her family returned to Aotearoa when she was about 7 years old.
Dot now lives in Waikato and teaches a range of languages at Waihi College. She says through her teaching it has become apparent there is a lack of knowledge about Asia in schools: its range of languages, culture, and values. She believes students in rural communities in particular need to celebrate, mix with, and learn about Asia and form more positive connections.
Dot hopes to initiate a broader understanding of Asia in her community, and has done so already in a number of ways, such as by connecting with Taiko drummers and Jiu Jitsu practitioners, incorporating parents from Asian countries in classroom learning, and using different internet platforms to connect her school and Japanese exchange students.
