The 2020 programme

The programme runs from 12 April 12 to 3 May with the theme Inequality in the U.S. and Asia: Drivers, Consequences, and Policy Responses. It involves a three-week dialogue, travel, and reporting programme to Honolulu, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Jakarta and will contextualise and compare widening disparities of income, wealth, and opportunity within the United States and Asia.

The programme will enable journalists to better understand the distributional consequences of technological change, globalisation, and market reforms, which arguably favour skilled over unskilled labour, capital over labour, and urban and coastal areas over rural areas.

Head to the East West Centre website for more information about the programme.

Grant details

The Asia New Zealand Foundation will cover most travel and programme-related costs for the successful New Zealand participant. The estimated value of this grant is NZ$13,000.

The participant – and preferably their newsroom – will need to pay the US$800 programming fee (about NZ$1185) and  all applicable visa fees, any additional visa-related expenses, health insurance and any baggage fees.
