ACICIS journalism
professional practicum

The Asia New Zealand Foundation supports New Zealand journalism students, and recent journalism graduates, to attend the Australian Consortium for In-Country Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) Journalism Professional Practicum in Jakarta, Indonesia.

About the programme

The ACICIS Journalism Professional Practicum (JPP) is suitable for students of journalism, media and communication studies, and early career journalists.

The six-week programme consists of intensive Indonesian language study at Atma Jaya University, industry-led English language seminars, and a supervised practicum placement with a local or international media or communications organisation operating within Indonesia. The programme runs from early January to mid-February each year.

What we provide

The Asia New Zealand Foundation offers a grant worth NZ$9000 towards participants' course fees (AU$4,679), travel costs, and accommodation.

Programme participants are expected to make a small contribution towards their expenses while in Jakarta (around NZ$500).

You must be:

  • A New Zealand journalism graduate or student enrolled in a current journalism course. We will also consider applicants who are able to demonstrate a track record in journalism (e.g. interviewing others for news stories)
  • A New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

Sharing your experience is an important part of this initiative as it enlightens others about developments in Asia, and demonstrates the work of the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Reporting requirements

Foundation grantees are expected provide reports on their experience, and to seek opportunities to share their experience on their return to New Zealand, and to remain engaged with the Asia New Zealand Foundation. Sharing your experience with others is an important part of this initiative as it enlightens others about developments in Asia.

Grantees are required to write a 600-word article (with photos) on their experience (to be submitted during or no longer than one month after returning from the programme), that will be published on the Foundation’s website.

All participants will be required to agree to our standard terms and conditions for Asia New Zealand Foundation funding recipients.

How to apply
