Leadership Network China Hui 2019

The Foundation is offering up to eight members of the Leadership Network the opportunity to travel to China to take part in the network's China Hui and attend the Opening Doors to the West business forum.

About the opportunity

The application period has now closed for this opportunity

The hui will run from Sunday 8 September to Thursday 12 September (not including travel time). It will start in Chengdu and finish in Xi'an.

Leadership Network members will attend the China Chamber of Commerce Opening Doors to the West business forum, which is being held in Chengdu and Xi'an from 9 to 11 September.

The forum will be attended by a tourism-focused trade mission supported by several business and government agencies from New Zealand and China. The three-day forum will be divided between Chengdu and Xi'an and include cultural activities, official banquets and a Tang Dynasty welcome ceremony normally reserved for heads of state. The Foundation is a sponsor of the business forum.

Either side of the forum, Leadership Network members will spend time together to build connections within the group and discuss leadership in an offshore context.

Please note that the Foundation is working with the Chamber of Commerce to put together a delegate package. This makes it likely that you will need to travel with the group and fly on specific dates.

The purpose of the China Hui

Hui like this are a part of the Individual Leadership Pathway assessment of growth. The purpose of the China Hui is to:

  • deepen connections – both within the Leadership Network and with New Zealanders involved in the New Zealand-China relationship
  • grow awareness and knowledge of Asia – build network members knowledge and understanding of China
  • grow confidence – provide members with an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in China.

Who should apply?

This opportunity provides an excellent introduction to New Zealand’s relationship with China. Because it is at an introductory level, we will select Leadership Network members who have no or limited experience in China.

The key benefits from attending the hui are:

  • Gaining access to New Zealand officials and seeing how ‘NZ Inc’ operates offshore.
  • Getting an understanding of how China hosts official delegations and how China projects itself internationally.

What's covered?

The Asia New Zealand Foundation will fund the costs for successful applicants, including:

  • a return economy airfare
  • domestic transport
  • accommodation
  • most meals and miscellaneous expenses.

Participants will need to cover their own spending money and insurance costs.

How to apply

To apply for this opportunity, you will need to complete the application form by 12pm, Tuesday 30 July, 2019.

You will need to:

  • say why you are interested in attending the hui, how it would grow your leadership skills and what you would bring to the group
  • provide a 100-word profile and a photo of yourself (head and shoulders), which will be used in the formal programme if you are successful in your application
  • provide a scan or photo of your current passport.

Applicants will be notified by email whether their application is successful or not by Friday 9 August.

Selection criteria

Preference will be given to network members who:

  • provide a compelling reason to attend the China Hui and learn about New Zealand-China relations
  • have not travelled to China or have had limited experience with China
  • demonstrate how participating in this opportunity will support their future career development
  • demonstrate how they will share what they learned from this opportunity with their wider networks
  • demonstrate their commitment to growing New Zealand-Asia connections.

The Foundation will also take into consideration whether applicants:

  • are engaged with the network and the Foundation and have demonstrated leadership in their workplace or community towards achieving the network’s vision
  • have not been on an offshore forum or hui with the Leadership Network for the last two years.

Please note that we can provide a letter of support to employers should it be required.
