New Zealand sports leaders India delegation

The Asia New Zealand Foundation is offering six emerging and established sports leaders the chance to visit Mumbai and Ahmedabad (Amdavad) to explore India’s world-leading sports industry, forge connections and expand their professional networks.

2026 marks 100 years of New Zealand-India sporting connections, dating back to an Indian army hockey team’s visit to New Zealand in 1926.

The delegation is designed to strengthen New Zealand’s sporting ties with India, a global hub for professional sports that attracts Kiwi athletes, administrators, and coaches, and will host the Commonwealth Games in 2030.

The visit will take place in mid-May (exact dates tbc).

Singapore's approach to active living provides lessons for NZ

With some six million people packed into an area less than half the size of Stewart Island, you might expect places to exercise—or even simply enjoy the outdoors—to be hard to find. In reality, green spaces and exercise areas are woven throughout the city and within easy reach of most residents, writes Sports Hawke’s Bay chief executive Ryan Hambleton. Ryan recently travelled to Singapore to build connections and learn from sports leaders about what has—and hasn’t—worked in keeping the population active. His research was supported by a grant from the Foundation’s Sports Leaders Fund.

Japan volleyball tour wows Whakatāne students

Volleyball teams from Whakatāne's Trident College embarked on the "trip of a lifetime" in September, travelling to Japan to train with and play against local schools. On the Japanese courts, the boys' and girls' teams experienced an entirely different approach to the game: respectful, student-led, and efficient. Trident College student Gabriel Aruquipa Southerwood says he is eager to incorporate what he observed overseas into his training in Whakatāne and now understands why Japan is internationally recognised for its volleyball.

Intern gains international sports experience at World Aquatics Championships

"This internship reminded me that sport is not just about medals, but about people, service, and the connections that bring us together," writes 2025 Sport Singapore intern Ana-Rachel Enari.
