Professor Jolan Hsieh
Asia Honorary Adviser, Taiwan
Professor Jolan Hsieh, Ph.D., is a prominent scholar, specialising in gender equality, environmental justice, Indigenous education, and transitional justice.
Prof. Hsieh earned her doctorate in Justice Studies with a focus on Indigenous Rights and Movements from Arizona State University – Main Campus (USA) in 2002.
She is a professor in the Department of Ethnic Relations and Cultures and serves as the Director of the Centre for International Indigenous Affairs at National Dong Hwa University (NDHU), Taiwan, where she has received both the Research Excellence Award and multiple Teaching Excellence Awards.
Prof. Hsieh has held notable leadership positions, including Co-chair of the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium from 2019 to 2023 and former Chair of Amnesty International’s Taiwan Section.
She is currently the Chairperson of the Taiwan National Security Institute and a member of the Executive Yuan’s Human Rights Protection Committee. In addition, she led the Taiwan-Aotearoa Connection project to foster cultural and academic exchanges between Taiwan and New Zealand and was honored by the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office in Taiwan during the 10th anniversary of the ANZTEC for her significant contributions to Taiwan-New Zealand relations.
Her scholarly and advocacy work is deeply engaged with transitional justice and the healing of historical trauma, focusing on addressing past injustices and supporting the empowerment of Indigenous communities.
Prof. Hsieh’s roles as an Advisor and Reconciliation Commissioner on the Presidential Office's Indigenous Historical Justice and Transnational Justice Committee further illustrate her commitment to these critical areas. Her recent co-edited volume, "Indigenous Reconciliation in Contemporary Taiwan: From Stigma to Hope" (Routledge, 2023), reflects her ongoing dedication to advancing Indigenous rights, education and sustainable development.
