The Asia New Zealand Foundation invites final year undergraduate and postgraduate students with an interest in digital financial services to apply for an internship in the Philippines with Coins.ph.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic team engaged in growing the business platform of Coins.ph, one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing fintech companies.

Coins.ph enables anyone, including those without a bank account, to easily access financial services directly from their phone.

The Coins.ph internship is for students specialising in one of the following fields of study:

  • commerce
  • business
  • marketing
  • economics
  • statistics
  • physics
  • engineering
  • computer science
  • IT.

The internship will take place over three months between late November 2019 and March 2020.

About the internship

In order to better equip New Zealand businesses to thrive in Asia, the Foundation provides opportunities for New Zealanders to gain work experience in the region and to share that knowledge when they return. The internship programme aims to help New Zealanders build a better understanding of the people, environment and culture of their Asian host country.

The intern will join a team engaged in various aspects of market research and business. They will be given a specific project or meaningful work to do. A mentoring supervisor will be assigned to monitor the intern’s professional development and overall welfare.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to: 

  • be a part of a fun, smart and ambitious team
  • work with experienced Silicon Valley entrepreneurs
  • work closely with the development, marketing, and compliance teams in improving the product and providing solutions to increase product and process efficiency.

What's covered

The Foundation will cover the cost of:

  • return airfares to Manila
  • accommodation
  • travel insurance
  • a stipend to cover living expenses.

Coins.ph will make a contribution to a monthly stipend of PHP 10,000.00 (approximately $300).

The intern will be required to contribute NZ$500 towards their living expenses and take out appropriate travel insurance (subsidised by the Foundation).

The Foundation and Coins will jointly deliver pastoral care and introduce the intern to public and private sector networks in Manila.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

  • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
  • in good health
  • due to complete at least three years of tertiary study (in the aforementioned subjects) by November 2019
  • adaptable, mature, reliable and resilient
  • interested in pursuing a career involving the Philippines and the wider Asian region.

Ideal candidates will have an interest in the national culture of the Philippines and aspire to develop their capacity for working in cross-cultural environments.

Terms and conditions

Applicants must:

  • take out appropriate travel insurance (subsidised by the Foundation
  • contribute $500 towards living expenses
  • submit a 600-word article with photographs for the Foundation’s website while offshore
  • write a final three-page report evaluating the internship experience
  • participate in Foundation professional development activities and networking events after they return to New Zealand.

The successful applicant will be required to agree to the standard Terms and Conditions for Asia New Zealand Foundation funding recipients.
