The Asia New Zealand Foundation in conjunction with the New Zealand Film Commission invites experienced screen professionals to apply for a professional development opportunity with CJ Entertainment and the CJ Cultural Foundation in South Korea.

About the placement

Applications have closed for this this opportunity

This professional development programme is expected to run for approximately 4-6 weeks and is best suited to a "mid-career plus" producer with either producing credits on projects with an Asian element or an interest in furthering collaborative relationships with Asian industry partners.

The successful applicant will have industry experience and knowledge of the New Zealand screen industry. Familiarity with the South Korean screen industry and market would be an advantage.

The programme will include engaging with CJ Cultural Foundation and the CJE&M movie business units, as well as their international sales and distribution business.

As well as working alongside the company's movie business units, the successful applicant will engage in other activities such as industry networking, creative collaborations and market engagements.

Contacts made during the professional development programme will ideally lead to:

  • opportunities to co-create original screen IP content that is appealing to the New Zealand, South Korean and wider international markets
  • further professional career and project progression
  • future bilateral collaboration (whether official co-productions or otherwise) and talent exchanges.

Specific economic, cultural and developmental outcomes are expected of the candidate offered the opportunity, as well as a willingness to share the knowledge gained from the offshore experience with the New Zealand industry upon completion of the programme.

What’s Covered?

The Asia New Zealand Foundation and the New Zealand Film Commission will jointly cover the cost of:

  • return airfares to Seoul
  • travel insurance
  • living expenses
  • a small professional development grant.

CJ Cultural Foundation will assist with identifying suitable accommodation to ensure the candidate is supported by a mentor.

The Asia New Zealand Foundation and the CJ Cultural Foundation will jointly deliver pastoral care and introduce the intern to public and private sector networks in Seoul.

Successful applicants will be required to take out appropriate travel insurance (subsidised by the Asia New Zealand Foundation).

Applicants must:

•         be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents

•         be in good health

•         have previous producing credits in feature films

•         have projects with an Asian element in development; or be interested in pursuing further business or developmental opportunities with Asian markets, in particular the official co-production partner regions in Asia

•         be adaptable, mature, reliable and resilient

•         be willing to experience a Korean working environment and culture industry.

While the ability to speak Korean would be an advantage, it is not a prerequisite for this opportunity as English is widely spoken in the CJ offices. Ideal candidates will have an interest in Korean culture and aspire to develop their capacity for working in cross-cultural environments.

Terms and conditions

Applicants are expected to:

  • contribute a 600-word article with photographs for the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s website while offshore. The content may also be used by the New Zealand Film Commission for marketing purposes
  • write a final three-page report evaluating the business experience programme, including but not limited to a summary of the host market assessments, industry connections established and potential developmental outcomes
  • participate in Asia New Zealand Foundation professional development activities and networking events after they return from South Korea
  • participate in knowledge sharing sessions of the South Korean market and industry with New Zealand screen practitioners upon the programme completion.
