Wellington Asia Residency Exchange

The Wellington-Asia Residency Exchange (WARE) programme is a programme jointly run by the Asia New Zealand Foundation and the Wellington City Council. If offers New Zealand artists the chance to work at art spaces throughout Asia, while also offering Asian artists the chance to work in Wellington.

The programme is designed to strengthen the city's relationships with cultural centres in Asia and raises the profile of Asian arts in Wellington.

What the WARE exchange covers

Asia:NZ provides:

  • one economy-class return airfare to Beijing
  • a daily allowance to cover living costs
  • NZ$500 for exhibition materials
  • self-contained accommodation and studio space at Red Gate’s Bei Gao studio/lofts, local cellphone, wifi internet and local phone connection
  • a bicycle to explore neighbouring villages.

What is expected of the artist-in-residence?

This residency is for a committed artist who is willing to be challenged. The artist is expected to work full-time on their projects at the Red Gate studio.

The arist is expected to:

  • participate in an open studio at the end of their residency
  • work collaboratively with other artists where possible (Chinese and international artists participating in the programme)
  • be prepared to explore new technologies and mediums
  • be an ambassador for Wellington City
  • participate in activities related to the Wellington–Beijing sister city relationship
  • share their experience and residency outcomes through activities with the Wellington community upon their return.

The successful applicant will have:

  • previous residency or exhibition experience – at least one solo and one group exhibition
  • an industrious, hard-working attitude
  • an interest in experimenting with new technologies and mediums
  • an interest and skill in communicating with people from a range of cultural backgrounds
  • the resilience to adapt to, and be self-sufficient within, the city and culture of Beijing

The WARE programme's aims are to :

  • facilitate an exchange of art practices and ideas between Wellington and Asia
  • establish ongoing relationships with Asian cultural centres developing Wellington’s international profile and creative identity in Asia
  • raise the profile of Asian arts in Wellington
  • work towards creating an Asia-literate society in New Zealand by 2020.

WARE is aimed at professional, contemporary arts practitioners of all disciplines from Asian countries and Wellington.
