Media Grants

Each year, through its Media Travel Grants, the Asia:NZ media programme offers New Zealand journalists the chance to travel to Asia to research and prepare stories.

In addition to the Travel Grants, the Media Discretionary Grants allow for partial assistance to correspondents travelling to Asia. There are no specific criteria for applying for the Discretionary Grants: project details and circumstances will be judged on merit. Through the discretionary fund, we also support media staff exchanges, internships and work placements to a variety of Asian media outlets.

In these selected articles journalists have shared their experiences of past Asia:NZ-funded assignments.

NEW: Asia:NZ media programme internships and scholarships:

  • Internships for young journalists in three prestigious Asia-based media organisations. The journalists for the 2010 temporary placements are Pushpa Jabin (TVNZ), Jono Hutchison (TV3) and Amanda Fisher (Fairfax Media). Read more.

  • A scholarship programme designed to encourage greater representation of Asian communities in mainstream New Zealand journalism. A young Filipino-New Zealander, Corazon Miller, was awarded this first Kiwi Asian journalism scholarship. Read more

Media Discretionary Grants

There are no set deadlines - you may apply throughout the year to the discretionary fund, filling in the relevant sections of the media grant application form available below. Applicants for journalism internships should fill in the sections relevant to their project.

How to apply?

The application form should be accompanied by a set of required proposal documents, which are outlined in the form. Ensure you have carefully read the guidelines in the form before applying.

Interactive PDF application form

In order to make the application process easier for you, we have introduced a new interactive PDF application form.

  • The advantage of this form is that  you can fill it in electronically (on your computer), save the form to your computer, and then either email it through or print a copy to post to us.

  • Type into each field of the form, then use the Tab key to move to the next field.

  • Important: When you fill in the form electronically, do not type any further if you see a vertical scroller or a + sign – any text going below the visible borders of a box will not show when the form is printed.

  • Once you have finished typing, go to File, choose Save As and save the form on your computer. You can save each form under a unique name and reuse information already entered.

  • To use this interactive form and to be able to save changes, you need the latest version of Adobe Reader:
