Wellington Chinese New Year celebrations
A photo exhibition of Chinese New Year festivities from around the world, and creating and sharing Spring Festival calligraphy couplets, will feature at a day-long Lunar New Year celebration in Wellington.
The free event is being organised by The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in New Zealand, and will also include traditional Chinese dancing, music and lion dances.
The event takes place at the Chinese Anglican Mission (30 Glenmore Street, Kelburn) from 10am-3.30pm on Saturday, January 21. A formal government ceremonial session, including invited VIP guests, is expected to take place from 11am-11.30pm.
For centuries, Chinese families have hung Lunar New Year calligraphy couplets (successive lines of verse, typically rhyming and of the same length) on walls and around doors, inviting blessings and good fortune for the coming year.
Members of the public will be able to choose their own couplets to be painted by professional Chinese calligraphers and gifted to them to take home.
At the same time, Chinese community groups will perform musical and theatrical items on stage. Visitors will also be able to enter a lucky draw, with a large number of exquisite gifts to be given away on the day.
