Retail Management Group internship, Taiwan

This internship is for a senior marketing, ICT and information technology students interested in learning about web development, design and marketing in North East Asia.

In addition to its New Zealand base, the host, Retail Management Group Ltd (RMG), owns and operates two offices in China and Taiwan.

About the internship

The internship is for three to six months depending on the successful applicants’ preference and will run between November 2017 and June 2018. 

Successful candidates will be placed at RMG’s head office in Taipei, where they will be given meaningful work in website development technical role or a design and marketing role. The intern will be assigned a manager who will act as a mentoring supervisor.

Commerce students who are confident, mature and interested in developing a career involving the Asian region are strongly encouraged to apply. While obviously useful, Chinese language ability will not be required as the intern would be communicating in English with their manager and other colleagues.

This opportunity is a new internship. The Foundation is looking to recruit one or two interns in 2017.

Shortlisted applicants will have an opportunity to meet a representative of RMG at the interview stage of the selection process.

Applicants must be:

  • New Zealand citizens or have New Zealand permanent resident status
  • due to complete a commerce/management or business studies degree qualification by 2018
  • an enrolled student when you return from the internship - i.e. returning to continue studying at university in 2018
  • prepared to share information on the internship at business forums and other events on your return to New Zealand
  • able to demonstrate a strong interest in developing a career involving New Zealand and the Asian region
  • willing to participate in Foundation activities following the internship such as panel discussion, roundtables and school talks

While Chinese language ability is of course useful in Taiwan, it is not a pre-requisite for this opportunity.

How are the costs covered?

The costs will be split between the Foundation, host and the intern.

The Foundation provides a financial grant to cover the cost of return airfares to Taiwan, travel insurance, and some living expenses in Taiwan.

The host will cover the intern’s cost of commuting to and from the office, some living costs and the cost of accommodation. Interns generally use online accommodation sharing services to secure affordable accommodation. Accommodation options will be discussed with the successful applicant(s) prior to departure.

The intern will be required to contribute $500 towards their own personal costs (e.g. weekend travel, evening entertainment).

Successful interns are asked to not apply to other New Zealand government-funded organisations to defray the costs of this internship. It is adequately funded by the Foundation.

Reporting Requirements

Foundation grantees are expected provide reports on their experience, seek opportunities to share their experience on their return to New Zealand, and remain engaged with the Asia New Zealand Foundation. Sharing your experience with others is an important part of this initiative as it enlightens others about developments in Asia. 

Interns are required to write a 600 word article (with photos) on their internship experience (to be submitted during or no longer than a month after returning from the internship) that will appear on the Foundation’s website. Within a month of returning to New Zealand, the Foundation requires the intern to complete a 3-page narrative report about the internship.
