We support New Zealand journalists in learning more about Asia by providing travel grants, internships and access to Asia-related forums and speakers

Opportunity: ACICIS Journalism Professional Practicum in Jakarta, Indonesia

The Asia New Zealand Foundation supports New Zealand journalism students, and recent journalism graduates, to attend the Australian Consortium for In-Country Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) Journalism Professional Practicum in Jakarta, Indonesia.

What we provide

The Asia New Zealand Foundation offers a grant worth NZ$8,500, towards participants' course fees (AU$4,500), travel costs, and accommodation[RP1] .

Programme participants are expected to make a small contribution towards their expenses while in Jakarta (around NZ$500).


You must be:

  • A New Zealand journalism graduate or student enrolled in a current journalism course. We will also consider applicants who are able to demonstrate a track record in journalism (eg. interviewing others for news stories)
  • A New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.

Terms and conditions

Sharing your experience is an important part of this initiative as it enlightens others about developments in Asia, and demonstrates the work of the Asia New Zealand Foundation. All participants will be required to agree to our standard terms and conditions for Asia New Zealand Foundation funding recipients.

Reporting requirements

Foundation grantees are expected provide reports on their experience, and to seek opportunities to share their experience on their return to New Zealand, and to remain engaged with the Asia New Zealand Foundation. Sharing your experience with others is an important part of this initiative as it enlightens others about developments in Asia. 

Grantees are required to write a 600-word article (with photos) on their experience (to be submitted during or no longer than 1 month after returning from the programme), that will be published on the Foundation’s website.

How to apply

The 2018 application round has now closed

You can either email your application to us, or post or courier it (if providing hard copies, please post two copies). Please read the instructions below carefully.

You will need to complete the ACICIS JPP application form. The form is quite substantial and requires you to obtain references and passport photos, so allow yourself adequate time to complete it.

Note: You DO NOT need to complete page nine of the form, which is for ACICIS member universities only.

Once you have completed the form, please make one photocopy and post both copies to:

Ensure that all documents are attached to the email. Please note that if you email your form, you may still be asked to post hard copies at a later date.

Selection process

The Foundation will do an initial assessment of the applications. Candidates will then be shortlisted by a panel consisting of Foundation staff and external media experts.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by phone before the Foundation forwards successful applications to ACICIS for final approval.
