About the internship

The internship will take place over six weeks between mid-January and mid-March 2019. The aim is to give advanced- level, Japanese–speaking graduates an opportunity to gain an inside view of a Japanese railway company’s operations, and the chance to polish their language skills.

The internship is observational and provides opportunities to interview and discuss the company’s operations and culminates with a presentation to senior management. The KRC will tailor a programme that fits the academic background and aspirations of the intern.

This programme has been running for eight years and has been highly successful. To date all participants had, prior to the internship, spent sufficient time living in Japan to develop reasonably advanced Japanese speaking skills.

Your Japanese will improve greatly in the course of the internship, but reasonably conversational fluency at the outset is required as to gain the most from this the internship requires a high degree of listening comprehension. You will also need to be able to ask questions of management about the operations of the various companies within the group.

What’s covered?

The internship costs will be split between the Asia New Zealand Foundation, KRC and the intern.

The Asia New Zealand Foundation will cover the intern’s return airfares, insurance and a modest stipend to subsidise living costs. KRC will provide dormitory accommodation. The intern is required to contribute NZ$500 to cover some of their living expenses.
