Askar Grey Wolf
Chinese rock band sensation
A Chinese rock band that has been likened to “Asia’s Pink Floyd” will play at Wellington’s San Francisco Bathhouse on Wednesday February 15.
Askar Grey Wolf is from China’s Xinjiang province, at the heart of the old Silk Road trade route between China and Europe.
The band will feature as the headline act at both the Auckland and Christchurch Lantern Festivals. Askar Grey Wolf will play one concert in Wellington.
Lead singer Askar Mamat, a Uyghur by birth, fuses modern rock with a mix of Han Chinese and Xinjiang elements to create a unique sound.
Askar sings in both Mandarin and his own mother tongue. His band members are drawn from both the Han and Uyghur ethnicities.
Askar Grey Wolf has released several albums and has travelled to many overseas countries, including a successful Australian tour.
His New Zealand tour is supported by Asia New Zealand Foundation, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Air New Zealand.
