Dr John C C Chan

Chairman, Star Elegant Limited
Dr Chan is chairman, Star Elegant Limited and non-executive director of Transport International Holdings Limited, The Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Limited and Long Win Bus Company Limited. He is chairman and non-executive director of RoadShow Holdings Limited, and an independent non-executive director of Hang Seng Bank Limited and Guangdong Investment Limited. He is also chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Dr Chan was educated in Hong Kong and graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1964 with an Honours degree in English literature. He later obtained a diploma in management studies from the same university. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Business Administration (honoris causa) by the International Management Centres in 1997.
Dr Chan served in the Hong Kong Government from 1964 to 1978 and from 1980 to 1993. Among the key posts he held over the years were those of private secretary to the governor, deputy secretary (general duties), director of information services, deputy chief secretary, secretary for trade and industry and secretary for education and manpower. He also served as a member of the Executive Council from October 1992 to May 1993.
Dr Chan has also held important appointments in the private sector, including those of executive director and general manager of Sun Hung Kai Finance Company Limited (1978-1980), managing director of The Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Limited (1993-2006) and managing director of Transport International Holdings Limited (1997-2008).
Dr Chan has, in addition, held a wide range of public service appointments, including those of non-executive director of The Hong Kong Exchange and Clearing Limited (1999-2003) and chairman of the Council of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2002-2008).
Dr Chan was appointed a Justice of the Peace (JP) in 1994 and was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS) by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in July 1999. In 2000, he won the executive award in the DHL/SCMP Hong Kong Business Awards and received an Honorary University Fellowship from the University of Hong Kong.
