Deeper collaboration on research award announced

Asia:NZ’s knowledge and research programme is pleased to announce its collaboration with the New Zealand Asian Studies Society through a joint postgraduate research award. While Asia:NZ, through its education programme, and the Society have collaborated on the award for many years now, this new approach further deepens the important collaboration of these two organisations while refining the award’s criteria to best meet their mutual needs.

Dr Andrew Butcher, Asia:NZ’s research director, outlines the background to the partnership. “The New Zealand Asian Studies Society does very valuable work in encouraging the studies of Asia in New Zealand universities and this joint award will further encourage studies of Asia by emerging researchers in New Zealand.” 

“Asia:NZ is proud to work with the New Zealand Asian Studies Society in this way,” Dr Butcher continues. “We’re looking forward to encouraging in every respect the excellent emerging scholars in the studies of Asia in New Zealand from across a wide range of disciplines”.

Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, president of the New Zealand Asian Studies Society, explains that fostering deeper learning in this area is imperative. “In an age of globalisation, and especially in the context of a worldwide recession, the importance of this 'foundation of scholarship' has become even more conspicuous.”

“In this context, the importance of Asian studies for New Zealand’s future engagement with Asia can hardly be overemphasised.”

This joint award will complement existing Asia:NZ research grants and will encourage young and emergent researchers in the field of Asian studies in New Zealand. Applicants will need to be New Zealand citizens or Permanent Residents. These research awards, as with all Asia:NZ grants, will support excellence in research and will be awarded to the best emerging scholars in New Zealand.
