Chinese Lantern Festival

The schools programme is an important part of the Festivals in Auckland and Christchurch and includes a school lantern-making competition and midweek schools workshops with international performers where possible.

On average there are 15-25 schools that register at each venue with approximately 800-1500 student participants at each – in some years we have had up to 3500 in Auckland.

The best lanterns from participating schools are displayed in a focal point at each of the Lantern Festivals, numbering approximately 300-350 in three age categories ranging from 5 – 17 years to cater for both primary and secondary sectors.

Prizes are awarded to participating schools and to age category winners decided by a panel of judges and by public vote with winners announced on stage on the final night of the event.  The public vote is very popular and brings crowds of visitors to the schools programme marquee.

 Diwali Festival of Lights

The schools’ programme is a crucial part of the Diwali Festival. Leading up to and during the Festival, primary and secondary students get first-hand experience of an authentic Asian festival, interact with our visiting Indian artists and learn about an aspect of Indian culture which is outside their everyday experience. Look out for further details of our 2008 school programme.
