leadership styles

Leadership styles depend on how much power the leader is able to use, and then how they choose to exercise that power. Some common forms of leadership in political power are:

A democracy where the people of a nation put others in power by voting.

A dictatorship where a leader gains power over all people of a nation.

A monarchy where a king or queen inherits power.

Other leaders gain their ‘power’ by the role they take in society - such as writers, filmmakers, military leaders and people who care for others (humanitarians). Asia has produced some of the world’s most famous leaders. In the Learning about leaders of Asia table you will consider some of these and their differing leadership styles.

To examine these leaders, look at jigsaw learning as a model for cooperative learning. Divide the class into five groups. Each member of the group will become an 'expert' on the leader they are given. See the ten easy steps to describe this process more closely. Use the websites to get the information and complete the table. Then go back and inform the rest of your group about your leader.

After you have completed the table, place each of the five leaders on a continuum: Mark their position on the line and write their name beside it.
