1. There are a number of different ways in which someone can become a leader. Divide into groups and consider the following.  

Scenario A

Ice cream decisions

It is a hot day outside, and your group has decided to buy some ice creams. In order to save a bit of money, you are going to buy a large tub with enough for everyone to share. You have to decide which flavour to buy, from hokey-pokey, chocolate, boysenberry, cookies and cream, toffee, vanilla, or fudge.

Scenario B

Desert Island dilemma

Your class is enroute to the Pacific for a social studies field trip (you wish!) when your aeroplane experiences engine trouble and is forced to make a crash landing on a remote uninhabited island atoll.

Everyone is safe, but all the radio equipment is damaged and you have limited food and water. You need to decide what you will do from here to get shelter, food and water and get rescued. How do you go about this?

Extension: In your groups, role play either scenario A or B showing how the leaders emerged in the group.

3. There are many ways that people become leaders.

The most usual ways are through:

  • By being chosen (election)
  • By working their way up in a group (promotion)
  • By being the best person for the job (qualification/talent)
  • By being more committed that anyone else (dedication)

For each of the above ways, name one person who has risen to the position of 'Leader'. Complete the table.
