chinese lantern festival - drama
Drama
Level 3-4
Stilt walking is another traditional performance and a popular Lantern Festival event. It is said that the Chinese began using stilts to help them gather fruit from trees and this practical use of stilts gradually developed into a kind of folk dance.
Today's performers display amazing skill as they make incredibly difficult movements on stilts. Some even perform plays while walking about on stilts and while your students may not be ready for stilt walking, they can decide how stilt walking can be built into a play.
Discuss with the class how there are several legends about the origins of the Lantern Festival and explain each group will have the task of performing one of these legends to the class. Divide your class into drama groups, place these drama cards below in a hat and then a team leader can select their group's activity.
