Lights and Lanterns

The Diwali festival is celebrated on a grand scale in almost all regions of India. It too, is a festival of lights. Let’s see what the two festivals have in common.

  • Look here to find out all about the Diwali festival.
  • You now know a lot about the lantern festival but if you want to refresh your memory you could look here or here.
  • Draw a big two circle Venn diagram on a piece of paper that is at least A3 size.
  • Label the outside of one circle, "The Lantern Festival" and the outside of the other, "The Diwali Festival".
  • Decide whether the headings below should go in the left circle, in the right circle or in the middle. Remember the middle part of a Venn diagram shows the things that are common to both festivals.

An ancient festival, uses light, uses fireworks, a festival of fun, spectacular lights, lasts more than a day, celebrates a New Year, simple lights, held in February, celebrates legends and stories, special food, a religious festival, house entrances decorated, held October/ November, a family time, amazing colour, celebrated worldwide.
