Tibet, China and the Dalai Lama - Wellington
Start Time: Sunday 20 July 2008
End Time: Sunday 20 July 2008
While the media outside of China are focusing on catastrophies that are worth a headline, yet, finally seem to take notice of human rights issues and social conflicts in Tibetan areas of China, Chinese media condemn the recent protests by Tibetans as triggered by separatist infiltration from outside, namely the 'Dalai Clique'. Watching the news might push and pull us from one opinion to another without much insight into local grounds and complexities. Yet, how do Tibetans and social scientists working in the field perceive these problems? And, what do rural Tibetans in China think of the Olympics? And how does one deal as a social science researcher with political crises in the field?
