1 Shanthi Road is an artist-led initiative supported by a trust for the visual arts. It is a space that provides opportunities for artists to reflect and interact with the local artist community. Founded in 2003, 1 Shanthi Road is located in Bangalore in southern India. Visual artists, writers, and other artists working in new genres are all eligible to apply for the residency programme. Artists in residence are expected to interact with the local art college, give a public lecture, and end their residency with an open studio or exhibition. Residencies are typically three months in length and are charged at Rs.700 per day for housing and studio space. Expenses must be funded by the artist.

AdiShakti Laboratory for Theatre Arts Research, Pondicherry
Adishakti is a performance company engaged in the research and maintenance of traditional theatre, dance, music, movement, puppet and craft forms. Adishakti's work and experiments aim to involve the performer with his/her environment, medicine, architecture, technologies and eco system. Twenty years of researching performance techniques has enabled Adishakti to evolve an instructive system of performance training. Through their residency programme they offer the opportunity for international artists to stay on campus to either train with Adishakti or do their own work. Adishakti also hosts Workshops by other organizations.

Chhaap Printmaking Workshop, Baroda
Chhaap is cooperative print making workshop that conducts workshops, holds exhibitions and has recently started a residency programme. Residents are normally charged $300 USD per month for which Chhaap provide accommodation and the opportunity to conduct short workshops and exhibit at the end of their stay. Chhaap also encourage the artists in residence to give talks at the Art College and local schools.

Darpana Institute for Performance, Arts and Cultural Studies, Ahmedabad
Darpana is a workshop for the arts where performers from around the world collaborate. Established in 1949, Darpana is one of India’s oldest performing arts institutions. Darpana has become an international centre of the arts where students and professionals gather to hone their skills and to explore new territories in the arts and their use for social change. Classes are offered in a variety of forms including folk dance, music and theatre, Indian classical dance and music, indian contemporary dance, martial arts, drama, puppetry, and development communications. Accommodation close to the campus is available and students wishing for a different experience may also stay as paying guests with families. Students may apply individually or through a consortium of universities. Undergraduate university students, graduates, adults and teachers may all apply. No prior formal training required.

Global Arts Village, Delhi
A public charitable trust, the Village is an emerging international
residential arts center in New Delhi, providing a platform for cultural exchange
in all creative disciplines. It offers artist in residence programmes, classes,
retreats, special events and workshops. The three-acre campus combines gardens
with a multi-purpose ceramics-sculpture-painting studio, a two dimensional
studio, artist accommodation, performance halls, dance studio and exhibition
space. The Village also offers seven types of professional development
programmes including visual arts coordinator, curator, grant-writer in
residence, organisational developer, and performing arts coordinator.

Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad
The centre accepts applications year round for their artist residency
programme. Studio facilities are provided for artists who work in the media of
painting, sculpture and and print-making. Artists wishing to apply for the
programme must submit a resume, six recent slides or photographs of their work
and a project proposal. Artists must provide their own finances for board and
lodging and the studio rent is US$375 for three months.

KHOJ International Artists' Association, Delhi
KHOJ International Artists' Association is an artist led, alternative space for experimentation and international exchange based in India. Part of the global Triangle Arts Trust, KHOJ sees its role as an incubator for art and ideas, artistic exchange and dialogue in the visual arts. They aim to assist and develop media art, performance, sound, video, environmental, public and community based art, and other experimental modes of cultural production. KHOJ conducts a series of diverse programmes for artists and creative practitioners across a variety of media and disciplines, including international workshops, residencies, artists’ presentations, film screenings and symposia.

Sanskriti Foundation Residency Programme, Delhi
The Sanskriti Kendra is a retreat offered to artists and scholars where they
can reflect, interact, and create. Over the past few years the Kendra has
provided residencies to over 300 artists, poets, scholars, and writers from
nearly 30 countries, and to some 300 craftspeople and cultural activists. The
complex houses three museums of Everyday Art, Indian Terracotta and Textiles.
Visiting artists have an opportunity to interact with Indian craftspeople.

Tasara Centre for Creative Weaving, Kerala
Tasara, an institution dedicated to creative weaving, provides extensive
workshops and training programmes on weaving and related techniques. The Tasara
technique practiced is unique to the centre and Tasara tapestries have been
widely exhibited in India, Europe, the United States and the Middle East.
Individual looms with experienced weaving assistance are provided during the
residencies and Tasara is open to exploring individual interests in the realm of
creative and natural dyeing, printed and woven furnishings and fashion fabrics
developed as fine art. Tasara also has two spacious for painters or other
artists. Residencies are usually one to three months and artists pay a fee
which includes basic expenses such as food, accommodation and supplies for
weaving.
