Do you have a story to tell with an Asian perspective? Would you like to be a part of a development programme designed to help you develop your story into a ten minute play?

The Oryza Foundation™, [6]ten™ and THE EDGE® presents the Asian Tales™ project – a programme developed to bring Asian experiences to Auckland audiences through contemporary theatre.

We are seeking submissions from anyone (Asian or otherwise) who has the desire to share unique personal experiences and/or a story to tell that has an Asian perspective; persons who are interested in seeing their story become a 10 minute play.  Experience in playwriting is preferred but not necessary.

Submissions may be funny, tragic or insightful - the only requirements are that the story can be performed by a maximum of four actors in a fairly minimalist setting and must somehow interweave an Asian perspective.

Programme Structure

The Asian Tales™ project is divided into two phases. First up is a series of script development workshops: six successful applicants will be given the resources and support to develop their stories with a professional dramaturge over seven fortnightly workshops from 19 April to 12 July.

The resulting six ten-minute plays will be showcased at two workshop performances at the end of the program, open to the public and invited guests.

Questions and discussion of the works at the workshop performances will inform the project’s second phase – a professional season of the six ten-minute plays from 18 – 31 August 2008 at the Classic Basement space (formerly the Silo theatre).
