Chinese Lantern Festival to return to Christchurch in 2016

30 July 2014

Christchurch’s Chinese Lantern Festival will not be held in 2015, but will return bigger and brighter in 2016.

The Chinese Lantern Festival is organised by the Asia New Zealand Foundation with support from Christchurch City Council and sponsors.

“Christchurch has a packed events schedule in February and March 2015,” Asia New Zealand Foundation chairman Philip Burdon said. “The Lantern Festival marks the end of Chinese New Year celebrations, so it is connected to a specific timeframe.

“Over the next year, the Foundation will work with Christchurch City Council on a plan for the future of the event, and will aim to take the event back to the central city in 2016.”

Asia New Zealand Foundation first brought the Chinese Lantern Festival to Christchurch in 2005. It has since been held there annually, with the exception of 2011 when the February 22 earthquake forced its cancellation.

Auckland’s Lantern Festival will go ahead in 2015 as planned.
