Emerging Curators Tour 2024

The Asia New Zealand Foundation is currently offering an Emerging Curators Tour programme for up to six New Zealand visual arts curators to visit Vietnam from 29 May to 08 June 2024.

The aim of the Foundation’s Curators Tour programme is to develop professional networks, increase awareness of Asian artistic practice and develop audiences for Asian arts in New Zealand.

Vietnam presents a compelling destination for early career curators, offering a blend of cultural richness, economic vibrancy and youthful creativity. Its rich cultural heritage spans centuries, with influences from both neighbouring countries and colonial powers.

Meanwhile, contemporary Vietnam's rapidly growing economy is leading to increased investment in the cultural infrastructure and there is a growing appetite for arts experiences among the Vietnamese population.

These factors, combined with the country’s youthful population, makes Vietnam the ideal starting point for early career curators to develop cross-cultural exchange and collaborations with Asia.

What's involved

The 2024 tour will focus specifically on introducing New Zealand visual arts curators at the early stage of their career to the arts sector of Vietnam.

Delegates will be introduced to key visual arts institutions as well as selected significant cultural sites in Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City.

The programme will also include networking opportunities with independent Vietnam artists and curators.

Delegates will have an opportunity to:

  • Deepen understanding of Vietnamese art and culture: Enhance understanding of Vietnamese artistic and cultural practices, fostering cultural exchange and appreciation.
  • Strengthen networks for New Zealand curators in Asia: Facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing among emerging New Zealand curators in Asia, particularly in Vietnam.
  • Build connections for future cultural exchange: Lay the groundwork for future cultural exchange initiatives between New Zealand and Vietnam by establishing meaningful connections with Vietnamese arts practitioners.
  • Promote long-term NZ audiences' engagement with Asian arts: Foster connections and collaborations between practitioners in both countries to enrich the cultural landscape and promote cross-cultural understanding among New Zealand audiences.

The Foundation will arrange all aspects of the schedule in Vietnam and cover the costs associated with this programme.
